Excessive and Irresponsible Drinking, an Enabling Wife, and Encouragement for Constructive Change and Successful Alcoholism Rehab

It took quite a few years but Emily eventually made up her mind that she had enough with her husband’s excessive and unhealthy drinking. She was exhausted from seeing Barry come home in the early hours of the morning from drinking rather than spending time with her and the children. She was also drained from the second DUI Barry recently received. Furthermore she was tired of creating explanations for Barry when he couldn’t make it to work on a regular basis due to his problems with drinking. In a similar manner she was concerned about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Barry’s abusive drinking. And lastly she was tired of the hazardous financial jam into which he had placed his family because of his unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior.

When Irresponsible and Excessive Drinking Inspires a Person to do Something Positive About a Person’s Drinking Problem

One day when Emily was thinking about what she could do about her husband’s hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she simply had to do something constructive to cut into the unhealthy cycle of Barry’s unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior.

So she looked in the local yellow pages under “alcohol rehab” and discovered more than a few treatment facilities that were all located less than 25 miles away from where Barry and she resided.

Due to the fact that she didn’t know a lot about these rehabilitation clinics, she eventually decided to call some of them and ask a few questions. When she called each rehabilitation center she introduced herself and said that Barry, her spouse, was involved in careless and hazardous drinking behavior. She also mentioned that her spouse had an outstanding health insurance program at work and that outpatient or inpatient alcohol rehabilitation would be covered if a health care professional in the company health plan prescribed the rehabilitation.

At one treatment center, Emily was surprised that she was able to speak directly with a psychologist who asked her to come to the rehabilitation center to talk about her husband’s excessive and abusive drinking behavior in much greater detail.

Emily Talks to a Doctor About Her Husband’s Abusive Drinking

When Emily got to the treatment facility, she filled out some paperwork and then after approximately five or ten minutes got to see a healthcare professional.

After listening to Emily discuss her husband’s excessive and abusive drinking, the physician in a caring but resolute way explained to Emily how she more likely than not played a role in her husband’s excessive and unhealthy drinking through the years by rationalizing his drinking rather than allowing him to go through the results of his abusive drinking behavior.

Emily Learns That She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Abusive Drinking

Stated another way, the doctor stated to Emily that she may have been inadvertently enabling Barry’s harmful drinking behavior. The counselor also emphasized the fact that even though Emily could not control her husband’s conduct, with the guidance and encouragement of the rehab team at the rehab facility she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Barry’s unhealthy and abusive drinking but she could also learn how to motivate him to make an appointment at the rehabilitation center so that he could discuss his hazardous and excessive drinking behavior with a counselor.

Fortunately after Emily discussed this with Barry, and he saw that she was serious, Barry told her that he had been quite anxious about his unhealthy drinking behavior and that he was very pleased to learn that Emily wanted to do something affirmative about his hazardous and excessive drinking behavior. Consequently, he made an appointment to see a counselor at the local alcohol rehab facility.

Barry Agrees to See a Doctor About His Irresponsible Drinking

While simply calling a rehabilitation center does not ensure that a person’s hazardous and excessive drinking behavior will end or that one’s warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one exhibits will simply vanish, calling for an appointment is clearly a much needed aspect in the rehabilitation process. And due to the fact that Barry was serious about getting professional help for his hazardous and careless drinking, the likelihood of a successful recovery was substantially augmented.
