DRESSED TO THRILL: Costumes, fancy dresses
Do you realize that costume parties were considered scandalous in Britain for a long while, because folk connected them with debauchery and decadence? In the US, however, dressing up has, primarily, because of the mass popularity of Halloween and pantomimes. Some of my favorite childhood recollections are of Halloween costume parties, where I think I almost covered the pantheon of superheroes. The coolest part is that fancy dress are still an integral part of our Halloween, although we are now too old for trick-or-treating rituals.
In the West, fancy dress parties are most probably to have originated in Britain. The masked balls of the seventeen hundreds were likely the 1st costume parties. The Victorians introduced fancy dress affairs, that then became more and more popular. In modern times, on both sides of the Atlantic, costumes have become the life of most modern parties. So many of our favored parts from movies involve costume parties, don’t they? Remember Mean Girls, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Birdcage?
Scary or funny?
It is no wonder then that costumes and fancy dresses have become a big industry to cater to the demands of the populations. There are two chief reactions you might want to get from folk when you choose to appear in fancy dress. Either want to scare them, or make them laugh. Consequently, the best popular fancy dresses are those of people from horror or comedy theaters. Dracula is one of the favorites, as are Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin. More recently, there is quite a rage in TV shows, like Friends.
Pick and choose
So how do you get yourself a fancy dress? 1st, of course, you must choose what you wish to be, after closely evaluating the type of the party. Once you’ve done that, you have two options. You can go to a good fancy dress outlet and try out several and finally choose one. Who knows, while in the shop, you could feel so attracted to a particular dress that you may discard your 1st costume thought completely. The 2nd choice could be search for a dress on the Internet, from the many sites that offer costumes. Though this is evidently the simpler decision, it could become more troublesome than it looks. Especially if your outfit is delivered late, or if you discover that it does not fit or is constructed of sub-standard cloth, or that it is not how you had thought it to be. It’s not for nothing that they say, seeing is believing.
Make your own
Of course, you could put together your own fancy dress ensemble. This is especially useful for pantomimes, where you can put together Robin Hood outfits out of old leggings, adding trimmings to suitable jackets and feathers to old hats. If you happen to have any needlework skills also, you can give old outfits or costumes a complete new look and casually slip on a brand-new persona without spending more than a few cents. Now how about that —- self-made costumes —- for a new party thought?
